9.6 – Walking Safely in Your Community: Walking safely is one of the simplest and most empowering transportation skills to master. It teaches awareness, patience, and responsibility for your own safety. Always stay on sidewalks or crosswalks when available, and make eye contact with drivers before crossing. Wearing visible clothing and avoiding distractions like phones or headphones keeps you alert. Planning your route ahead helps you avoid unsafe or unfamiliar areas. Walking also builds physical fitness and mental clarity while connecting you more deeply to your community. Knowing how to recognize landmarks helps you navigate better over time. It’s wise to walk with others when it’s dark or in unfamiliar neighborhoods. Being mindful of traffic signals and weather conditions teaches smart decision-making. Each safe walk builds independence, focus, and trust in your ability to move through the world responsibly. Confidence starts with knowing you can rely on your own awareness to stay safe.
