5.5 – Safe Use of a Stove (Electric or Gas): A stove can transform simple ingredients into meals but also cause serious burns or fires if misused. Whether electric or gas, always start by checking that the surface is clear of towels, wrappers, or utensils. Never leave cooking unattended, since oils or liquids can overheat quickly. Use pot holders instead of bare hands, and turn pot handles inward to prevent spills. Gas users should ensure flames are blue, not yellow, meaning it’s burning cleanly. If you smell gas, turn everything off and ventilate immediately. Electric stoves stay hot even after turning off, so wait before cleaning or touching. Keep children and pets away from the area, and always double-check knobs after finishing. Consistency builds muscle memory, and safety grows from repetition. A stove, when respected, becomes a symbol of independence—helping you nourish yourself responsibly while protecting your home’s safety and peace.
