Lesson Overview

43.1 – Being Aware of Your Surroundings: Being aware of your surroundings is one of the most effective ways to stay safe in public. Awareness means noticing people, movements, and changes in your environment before problems arise. When you stay alert, you can spot exits, avoid crowds, and identify anything that feels off. Simple actions—like removing headphones, walking with purpose, and scanning the area—keep your attention sharp. Awareness also helps you protect your belongings and avoid unsafe shortcuts or isolated places. People who look confident and observant are less likely to be targeted. Avoid distractions that limit your senses, such as texting or daydreaming while walking. Trust your instincts if something feels wrong and adjust your route immediately. Being alert doesn’t mean being afraid—it means being smart, focused, and ready to act quickly when necessary.
