10.85 – Helping a Friend Who’s in an Unsafe Situation: Supporting someone in danger requires empathy balanced with caution. Listen without judgment and believe their story; disbelief can isolate victims further. Help them create realistic plans—safe words, packed essentials, and trusted contacts. Never pressure immediate decisions; safety must align with timing and readiness. Provide information for hotlines, shelters, or advocacy organizations discreetly. Avoid direct confrontation with abusers, which can escalate risk. Offer rides, emotional support, or resource connections instead. Keep communications private and deleted if needed. If violence seems imminent, contact emergency services immediately. Empower your friend by reinforcing that their safety matters more than pride or appearances. Standing beside someone in crisis demands patience; your calm presence teaches them that help doesn’t have to come with judgment. Compassion becomes a safety net woven from consistency, confidentiality, and unwavering respect for their autonomy and healing journey.
