11.18 – Adapting Clothing When You Have a Disability or Injury: Adapted dressing focuses on comfort, access, and independence. Choosing clothes with Velcro, magnets, or side zippers makes dressing easier when movement is limited. Soft, tag-free fabrics reduce irritation for sensitive skin. Sitting or standing to test fit prevents strain and promotes confidence. Customizing clothes—shortening sleeves, enlarging necklines, or adding grab loops—saves energy while keeping personal style intact. Adaptive options don’t erase individuality; they honor practicality with creativity. Many thrift or online stores now include inclusive designs that empower daily living. Using assistive tools like reachers or button hooks builds autonomy instead of dependence. Dressing adaptively teaches problem-solving: how to modify the environment rather than your dignity. When clothing works with your body instead of against it, every outfit becomes an act of freedom and thoughtful design.
