10.11 – Community Safety Basics for Walking, Riding, and Errands: Moving through your community safely depends on awareness, preparation, and presence. Walking means staying visible, avoiding distractions, and knowing familiar routes with good lighting. Riding public transit or bikes requires planning ahead, keeping valuables secured, and trusting your intuition about surroundings. Telling someone your destination adds accountability that enhances protection. Wearing reflective gear or bright clothing communicates visibility to drivers and others. Avoiding shortcuts through isolated areas minimizes risk while preserving independence. Carrying a charged phone and ID strengthens your ability to respond if plans change. Community safety is teamwork; neighbors, shop owners, and drivers all play a role when communication stays respectful. Confidence comes from knowledge, not luck. Practicing situational awareness daily helps you travel smarter, arrive calmer, and enjoy freedom without fear. Independence expands safely when every small habit aligns with thoughtful caution.
