19.2 – Organizing Dishes Before Washing: Organizing dishes before washing makes cleanup faster, cleaner, and less stressful. Begin by scraping leftover food into the trash or compost so you don’t clog drains or dirty the water quickly. Group similar items together—plates with plates, glasses with glasses, utensils in one pile. This method keeps the washing process efficient and prevents breakage from overcrowding the sink. If using a dishwasher, pre-rinse heavily soiled items but don’t over-scrub unnecessarily. For hand washing, fill the sink with warm, soapy water for soaking before you start. Working in order—glasses first, utensils next, then plates and pots—keeps the water cleaner longer. Organized steps mean fewer mistakes and smoother flow. When cleanup feels structured instead of chaotic, it becomes part of a routine that saves energy and keeps your kitchen running smoothly every day.
