5.4 – Operating a Refrigerator and Freezer: Your refrigerator and freezer keep food fresh and safe, but only if used correctly. Setting the temperature too high or leaving the door open can cause spoilage and bacteria growth. Keeping it too cold wastes energy and can freeze produce or drinks. Learning how to arrange items so air circulates evenly prevents warm spots that make food go bad faster. Regularly cleaning shelves, wiping spills, and checking expiration dates help you stay organized and protect your health. Never block vents or overfill shelves, as that forces the motor to work harder and shortens its life. Make it a habit to close the door gently and completely every time. Defrosting freezers when ice builds up keeps cooling steady and saves electricity. Knowing how to unplug and move the unit safely during cleaning reduces shock risks. A well-maintained refrigerator represents discipline and foresight—it’s not just storage; it’s part of your personal safety system.
