10.71 – Managing Safety When You’re Overstimulated or in Shutdown Mode: Overstimulation can blur judgment and slow response time, making safety planning essential for those with sensory or stress sensitivities. When noise, light, or crowds feel overwhelming, have a ready escape plan—a quiet corner, headphones, or weighted blanket nearby. Create signals for others to know you need space without verbal explanation. Practice deep-pressure or breathing techniques to regain grounding. Avoid driving or operating appliances during shutdowns; ask trusted people for temporary assistance instead. Prepare low-stimulation kits with soft textures or familiar scents to ease transitions. Reducing stimulus doesn’t mean avoidance—it’s strategic energy management. Learning to pause before panic keeps you safe without shame. When your environment feels predictable and gentle, your nervous system learns to trust safety again. Consistency turns coping into confidence that lasts far beyond each moment of overload.
