Lesson Overview

13.4 – Practicing Active Listening Without Interrupting: True communication means listening to understand, not just waiting for your turn to talk. Active listening requires presence—facing the speaker, keeping eye contact, and nodding to show you’re engaged. Interrupting often breaks trust, because it makes the other person feel unheard or dismissed. Letting someone finish builds safety, and people share more when they sense respect. Even if you disagree, patience allows you to hear details you might otherwise miss. Repeating back key points shows you value accuracy, not competition. Small gestures—leaning slightly forward, keeping your phone away—speak volumes about your respect level. When you listen deeply, you pick up emotional clues that words alone can’t show. This skill improves friendships, teamwork, and even conflict resolution because it transforms tension into understanding. Listening is more than silence; it’s the quiet action that builds lasting relationships and mutual trust.
