Lesson Overview

1.1 – The Freeze Response: What It Is and What to Do: The freeze response is the body’s natural way of protecting you when it senses danger, even if that danger isn’t physical. It’s like your mind pressing pause so it can assess the threat before reacting. When you freeze, your heart rate may slow, your muscles tighten, and your thoughts can feel stuck in slow motion. This is not weakness—it’s biology. Your brain’s survival system takes over, focusing all energy on staying safe. Understanding this helps you respond with patience instead of shame. You can gently restart your system by noticing your breath, naming what’s happening, and making small physical movements like unclenching your jaw or tapping your fingers. Once your body feels safe again, your mind follows. The goal isn’t to eliminate the freeze response but to learn how to come back from it more quickly. With practice, awareness becomes your anchor through moments of overwhelm.
