Lesson Overview

1.16 – What to Do When You’ve Just Had a Flashback: Flashbacks feel like the past is crashing into the present, stealing your sense of time and control. The first step is to ground yourself by naming where you are and what year it is. Remind your mind that the danger isn’t happening now. Try focusing on physical sensations—press your feet into the floor, hold something solid, or breathe through your nose slowly. When your heart races, counting out loud helps reconnect logic with emotion. Once calm, jot down what triggered the flashback so you can notice patterns later. Talking to someone safe can turn fear into understanding, giving the memory less power next time. Don’t punish yourself for reacting; your body was protecting you. With practice, you’ll learn to ride through the storm instead of drowning in it. Each flashback survived proves you’re not trapped—you’re healing.
