1.3 – When Your Teen Says They Want to Die: Hearing your teen express a wish to die can feel like the ground disappearing beneath you, but steady action can save a life. Take every statement seriously — never dismiss it as attention-seeking. First, remove immediate dangers such as weapons or medications, and stay physically present. Listen more than you speak; silence can communicate safety when words fail. Ask directly about their thoughts and plans — doing so doesn’t plant ideas; it reveals risk. Reach out to crisis hotlines or mental-health professionals immediately for guidance. Inform trusted family or friends who can assist in supervision. After the crisis passes, follow up daily with consistent routines, therapy support, and expressions of unconditional love. Remind them that emotions can change, but life can’t return once lost. Compassion, vigilance, and connection together form the strongest protection against despair.
