Lesson Overview

1.38 – What to Do After a Self-Harm Incident: Witnessing self-harm terrifies any parent, but composure ensures safety. Stay calm and assess severity before reacting emotionally. Remove harmful objects and seek medical care immediately if bleeding or infection risk exists. Avoid interrogations; focus on stabilization. Express relief they’re alive and appreciation for honesty if they disclosed the act. Schedule mental-health evaluation quickly and create a no-shame environment. Discuss alternative coping tools — ice cubes, drawing, breathing — to redirect pain safely. Check-in regularly without hovering. Healing requires both empathy and supervision. Each response anchored in calm love tells them their body deserves care, not punishment, and recovery remains fully possible.
