Lesson Overview

1.82 – Protecting Your Autonomy During a Crisis: Crises often invite others to overtake your decisions. Protecting autonomy means accepting help without surrendering authority. Communicate clear preferences—treatment choices, boundaries, who to contact. Write them down for emergencies when voice may fail. Assert calmly: “Please include me in decisions.” Cooperation works best when agency stays intact. If systems override you, document concerns respectfully. Reclaim choice through small actions—selecting food, setting schedule—to rebuild control signals. Autonomy nurtures dignity; dignity accelerates recovery. You are participant, not patient alone. Empowerment inside chaos converts vulnerability into structure. True recovery happens when safety and self-direction coexist within the same plan.
