1.23 – Planning a 911 Call With a Toddler at Home: Calling 911 while managing a toddler requires clarity and preparation. Save your address and key information on paper near the phone in case you freeze. Practice saying, “I need help; I have a child with me,” until it feels automatic. Teach your toddler a safe spot or simple command like “sit by the bear” to keep them stationary during emergency calls. If possible, put the call on speaker to keep hands free. Keep doors unlocked if you expect responders. Have quiet activities nearby to occupy your child as you follow instructions. Afterward, reassure them calmly that helpers are coming and safety is being restored. Debrief yourself once the crisis passes—shake out your hands and breathe to release stored tension. Preparation turns panic into procedure; knowing your plan ahead of time transforms fear into focused action when seconds matter.
