Lesson Overview

1.29 – When Your Toddler Hits You and You’re About to Snap: A toddler striking you can trigger shock, anger, and humiliation all at once. The instant reaction may be defensive, but restraint protects the relationship. Step back immediately and place distance between your bodies while keeping your voice low. Remember that toddlers hit from confusion, not cruelty. Say calmly, “We use gentle hands,” while holding your own hands visibly still. If emotion floods you, turn away momentarily to release tension—breathe or squeeze a pillow instead of reacting. Model calm repair after control returns: guide their hand toward soft touch and praise gentleness. Later, reflect on what environment or fatigue led to the behavior so prevention becomes easier. Physical aggression in toddlers is developmental, not defiant. Your consistency in staying calm teaches boundaries through empathy. Every non-reaction rewires safety, showing strength isn’t punishment—it’s composure under pressure.
