Lesson Overview

1.3 – Navigating Crisis with a Disability: A person with a disability faces unique challenges during a crisis, from mobility barriers to communication gaps that can heighten fear. Crisis response must account for accessibility at every stage—physical, emotional, and informational. People with visual, hearing, or cognitive differences need support that adapts to how they receive and process information. Using simple language, accessible technology, or physical assistance without overstepping autonomy shows respect. Always ask before offering help, and honor their preferences for how support is delivered. Disabilities don’t define someone’s ability to cope, but poor planning can make them more vulnerable. Preparedness means having accessible shelters, emergency communication tools, and trained responders who understand disability etiquette. Emotional reassurance matters just as much as practical help—validating frustration or fear keeps trust intact. True inclusivity in crisis care ensures no one is left behind or silenced by inaccessibility. Every act of accessibility is an act of dignity and empowerment for those navigating crisis with a disability.
