1.229 – Practicing Self-Parenting During Panic: Self-parenting means offering yourself the calm authority a caring adult would give a frightened child. Begin with tone: speak softly inward, using phrases like “you’re safe now” or “we’re handling this together.” Anchor breath to slow, steady rhythm and maintain gentle posture. Visualize your adult self guiding your younger emotions through the moment. Replace internal criticism with reassurance; shame dissolves under empathy. Prepare a brief mantra that combines comfort and direction—“breathe, look, move.” Physical gestures such as hand-on-heart reinforce presence. After the episode, debrief kindly instead of analyzing mistakes. Repetition trains your nervous system to seek nurturing rather than punishment. Over time, panic becomes a cue for compassion, not fear. Practicing this dual identity—caretaker and cared-for—restores balance between strength and softness, proving you can be both protector and survivor within the same breath.
