1.5 – How to Keep Calm When Your Child Is in Crisis: The first rule of crisis control is containment, not correction. When emotions explode, lower your body posture and voice to model control instead of demanding it. Focus on breathing with slow exhalations to regulate both nervous systems simultaneously. Ask simple, safety-oriented questions instead of emotional ones—“Are you hurt?” or “Can we move somewhere quiet?” Physical reassurance anchors safety before reasoning can begin. Avoid threats or lectures; adrenaline blocks comprehension. Once the wave passes, gently name what happened without shame, framing it as teamwork against stress rather than conflict between you. Over time, your consistency rewires your child’s instinct from panic to communication. Calm becomes contagious, teaching resilience through example, not explanation.
