Lesson Overview

1.5 – Calming a Toddler When You’re Crying Too: Moments when both you and your toddler cry together are deeply human, not shameful. Tears are signals of emotional overload, not signs of weakness. While you cry, keep your movements slow and your voice low; this teaches your child that feelings can coexist with safety. Sit on the floor, breathe, and let your child see that emotions end—they don’t last forever. Touch can communicate stability better than speech, so hold hands or rest a gentle palm on their back. Whisper something repetitive and soothing like “We’re okay, we’re okay.” Once your breathing slows, they often match your rhythm naturally. Later, explain feelings in simple words so they learn empathy from your honesty. Emotional transparency builds secure attachment stronger than pretending strength. Every shared cry repaired with calm builds trust. Over time, your vulnerability becomes their emotional education and model for resilience.
