Lesson Overview

1.1 – What to Do When Your Teen Threatens to Run Away: When your teen threatens to run away, the first step is to steady your own emotions before reacting. Fear and anger can push the situation further, but calm presence helps lower tension. A running-away threat often hides pain, shame, or a desperate need for control. Instead of lecturing, ask what they’re hoping to escape from and what feels unbearable right now. Show empathy without approving risky choices. Clarify that their safety matters more than punishment and that no crisis is bigger than their worth. Offer small solutions such as time apart, a walk, or a written conversation to reduce confrontation. If the threat repeats, set up a safety plan and alert supportive adults in advance. Teach them that leaving home doesn’t erase problems — it only moves them. Love with firmness shows them they are seen, valued, and not alone, even when they push away hardest.
