Lesson Overview

1.10 – How to Cope After a Triggering Event: After a triggering event, your system may stay on high alert even when the danger is gone. The key is gentle recovery, not rushing to feel “normal.” Start by grounding your body—breathe deeply, stretch, or hold something cool to your skin. Remind yourself where you are and that you are safe now. Avoid self-criticism; your reaction is a normal part of trauma recovery. Connect with someone supportive or write about the experience to release pressure. If flashbacks or panic arise, treat them as signals that your brain needs reassurance, not punishment. Rest, hydration, and calm music can help your nervous system reset. Coping after triggers means caring for your body as much as your mind. Healing takes repetition, not perfection, and every effort you make strengthens your resilience for next time.
