Lesson Overview

1.20 – What to Do When You’re Mentally “Not Here”: Dissociation can make life feel like watching yourself from far away, disconnected from surroundings and sensations. It’s your brain’s way of protecting you from overload, but it can also leave you scared or confused. To bring yourself back, engage your senses one by one: smell something strong, feel texture, name colors. Remind yourself of the date and your name aloud—it reanchors you to the present. Move your body gently, noticing how muscles respond. Avoid judging the detachment; it’s a survival mechanism, not a failure. After grounding, reflect on what triggered it—fatigue, fear, or memory. Understanding patterns reduces future intensity. If it happens often, talk to a counselor trained in trauma responses. The goal isn’t forcing presence but creating safety so your mind no longer needs to flee. Awareness transforms absence into steady re-entry to now.
