Lesson Overview

1.7 – Preparing for a Sudden Emotional Emergency at Home: Emotional emergencies strike without warning, but predictable patterns exist. Identify early signs—rapid breathing, pacing, tears, or silence—and have a step-by-step plan ready. Post important numbers near phones, teach older children how to call for help, and assign calm-down spaces that feel safe. Reduce chaos: lower lights, silence TVs, and remove sharp objects quietly. Keep grounding tools nearby—soft blankets, water bottles, stress balls—to anchor sensory comfort. Practice crisis language beforehand so instructions sound familiar, not panicked. After the episode, debrief gently, focusing on what worked rather than what failed. Each rehearsal builds household confidence, proving to children that emergencies don’t have to equal disaster. Structure transforms unpredictability into shared control, turning chaos into a momentary challenge instead of lasting trauma.
