1.34 – Managing Your Triggers When You Hear Crying: Crying may awaken old memories of helplessness, so preparation converts trigger into tolerance. When tears start, scan your body: tighten-release muscles from shoulders down to feet. Lower volume in your environment before comforting; noise layering amplifies distress. If your reaction spikes, hum quietly to mask frequencies that irritate your brain. Tell yourself aloud, “Crying is communication, not catastrophe.” Approach your child once your tone steadies; forced calm convinces neither of you. Offer contact or proximity according to their comfort. Afterward, decompress privately—walk outside, breathe fresh air, or journal short reflections. Identifying what memories activate your trigger grants power to disarm it. The more consistently you manage that first sound wave, the shorter each spiral becomes. Healing your response to crying rewrites history into present-moment control.
