Lesson Overview

1.202 – The “Name It to Tame It” Strategy in Crisis: When fear floods the mind, language becomes the bridge back to control. Naming what’s happening—“my chest feels tight,” “I’m scared,” “this is panic”—gives the brain structure to hold chaotic feelings. Labeling emotion moves activity from the survival center to the reasoning center, calming the inner alarm. Saying words out loud reduces confusion and restores perspective, like turning on a light in a dark room. This habit prevents emotions from swallowing logic by transforming sensation into data you can manage. It also invites compassion instead of judgment, making recovery faster and cleaner. The more accurately you describe what you feel, the easier it becomes to regulate. Even brief phrases remind your system that you’re the observer, not the emotion itself. Language organizes energy, and when energy is organized, crisis loses power.
