Lesson Overview

1.17 – What to Do When You Scare Your Own Child: Realizing your reaction frightened your child is heartbreaking, but it can become a turning point for growth. Approach slowly, kneel down, and use a soft voice that rebuilds trust immediately. Avoid over-explaining; presence matters more than reasons. Say, “You’re safe with me,” and hold space for their reaction, even if they pull away at first. Give time for their nervous system to re-learn calm by seeing your steady breathing. Later, apologize simply without forcing forgiveness. Reflect on what triggered your reaction so you can plan better exits or coping strategies. Children remember how safety returns, not just how fear appeared. When they see you repair the moment with tenderness, they internalize resilience instead of trauma. One frightening episode doesn’t define you—it can define commitment to better control. Healing begins the moment you choose gentleness over denial.
