Lesson Overview

1.20 – When Your Toddler Doesn’t Understand What’s Happening: Toddlers sense tension long before they can comprehend its cause. When chaos unfolds, their confusion may turn into panic or acting out. Your job is to simplify the world until it feels safe again. Use short phrases like “We’re safe,” “Mommy’s here,” repeated with steady cadence. Keep gestures broad and predictable—open arms, gentle nods, rhythmic breathing. Lower sensory stimulation: mute television, soften lighting, and reduce competing sounds. Hold them if they seek contact; if not, stay near quietly so proximity feels secure. Narrate only essentials—too much language adds confusion. Once calm returns, maintain routine—familiar snacks, toys, or songs—to re-establish normalcy. Over time, these consistent signals teach trust even when understanding lags. Stability isn’t about perfect words; it’s about predictable love under uncertainty. Your steadiness tells them the world can pause and repair safely.
