Lesson Overview

1.08 – Emotional Flooding in Doctor’s Offices: Medical settings can unexpectedly trigger panic, shame, or tears. The sterile environment, authority of doctors, or past trauma may flood emotions beyond control. Before appointments, write key points to discuss so your brain has structure when anxiety hits. Practice deep breaths while waiting; exhale longer than you inhale to slow your heartbeat. If emotions rise, state simply, “I’m overwhelmed right now, I just need a moment.” Most healthcare workers respond with compassion when they know what’s happening. Bringing a support person or stress object helps you feel anchored. Focus on factual language rather than catastrophic thoughts—facts calm the body faster than fear. Afterward, reward yourself for showing up despite discomfort; that courage is progress. Over time, your nervous system learns that medical spaces can be safe again. Emotional flooding loses force when you meet it with preparation, not avoidance.
