Lesson Overview

1.12 – How to Handle Bad Memories Without Losing Control: Flashbacks and bad memories can hijack your body, making you feel trapped in the past. The goal is to remind your mind that you’re safe now. Start by noticing details around you—the color of the wall, the sound of your breathing—to bring focus to the present. Grounding techniques like holding something cold or naming five things you see help interrupt spirals. Don’t force memories away; instead, give them a container, like writing them down and closing the notebook when finished. This tells your brain the danger is over. Sharing with a therapist or support person builds safety through understanding. Healing takes repetition and patience, not perfection. Each time you survive a memory without losing control, your power increases. You become proof that the past can visit without taking over.
