1.4 – Coping When Adults Are Yelling: Hearing adults yell can make your stomach twist and your chest tighten because noise can sound like danger even when it’s just words. When that happens, remind yourself that their anger is not your fault, even if it feels heavy in the air. Find a quieter space — your room, the bathroom, or even outside — and put distance between yourself and the noise. Try covering your ears with music or headphones to replace shouting with calm sound. Focus on something steady, like your breathing, your pet, or a book, to anchor your thoughts. If you feel unsafe, call someone you trust or a help line and explain what’s happening. Remember, yelling rarely solves anything — silence and distance are tools that protect your peace. When the noise stops, take time to unwind before speaking again. Your calm response is strength, not silence, and it shows you know how to take care of yourself even in chaos.
