Lesson Overview

1.4 – Flashbacks and the Brain: A Trauma-Informed View: Flashbacks are the brain’s way of replaying unprocessed memories as if they’re happening again. When trauma isn’t fully digested, your mind can’t tell past from present, sending your body into fight, flight, or freeze without warning. Understanding this helps you separate memory from reality. Flashbacks aren’t proof that you’re broken—they’re signs your system is still trying to heal. Grounding techniques like naming your surroundings or holding a textured object help reorient you to the present. Telling yourself “I’m safe now” builds new neural pathways that teach your brain the danger is over. Each time you ground successfully, you weaken the power of old fear loops. Over time, flashbacks become less vivid and less controlling. Healing begins when your brain learns it no longer has to replay the past to feel safe in the present.
