Lesson Overview

1.34 – Managing Flashbacks Without Getting Stuck in Them: Flashbacks feel like time travel your body didn’t consent to—past fear suddenly hijacking the present. First, remind yourself: “This is a memory, not reality.” Ground with sensory anchors—press feet, describe surroundings, feel texture. These signals break the loop. Control breathing slowly; exhale longer than inhale. If images persist, narrate aloud what’s happening now to pull focus outward. Afterward, care for your body with hydration, warmth, and rest. Avoid shame; flashbacks are involuntary safety responses, not weakness. Over time, journaling triggers and outcomes reduces frequency. Professional support teaches techniques like safe visualization or EMDR to reprocess memories safely. Healing doesn’t erase memory but separates then from now. Each successful grounding proves your brain can revisit pain without reliving it, turning terror into knowledge and restoring authority over your own timeline.
