1.7 – Crisis Planning for Nights That Feel Unsafe: Nights can feel heavier because silence makes worries louder. Preparing before darkness helps you stay steady when fear rises. Keep a small light nearby, your phone charged, and important numbers saved. Identify one adult or friend who knows your situation and can answer if you text “need to talk.” Choose one quiet corner that feels like your safe zone—keep a blanket, book, or headphones there. If panic strikes, breathe through your nose for four counts and out through your mouth for six; the longer exhale signals safety to your brain. Keep a written plan: where to go, who to call, what to bring. Just having it can calm your nerves because it reminds you that you have structure even when emotions try to spin. Safety planning isn’t about fear—it’s about giving yourself permission to feel prepared, not powerless.
