Lesson Overview

1.02 – Preventing Substance Use During High Stress: Stress pushes the brain to seek quick comfort, and for people in recovery, that comfort once came from substance use. When pressure builds, your body releases chemicals that heighten tension and reduce clear thinking, making old habits feel tempting again. Recognizing early stress signs—tight shoulders, racing thoughts, irritability—lets you act before reaching your breaking point. Building calming rituals like stretching, stepping outside, or talking openly with someone trustworthy interrupts that dangerous cycle. Scheduling downtime, sleeping well, and eating regularly aren’t luxuries—they’re defenses. Resisting use under stress means learning to separate emotion from impulse, creating a pause between what you feel and what you do. Writing out stress triggers and pairing each with a healthy outlet transforms chaos into strategy. Each time you choose a mindful coping step, you rewrite your brain’s reward system. Over time, you begin associating peace, not substances, with relief. That’s how stress stops being a relapse risk and becomes a rehearsal for resilience.
