Lesson Overview

1.10 – Preparing for Anniversaries of Trauma: Anniversaries of trauma can reignite emotional pain even when you think you’ve moved on. Your body remembers dates before your mind does, causing anxiety or irritability weeks in advance. Planning for these anniversaries gives you control instead of surprise. Mark the date privately and build protective routines—light exercise, comfort food, therapy, or journaling—to soften its impact. Avoid overloading your schedule and communicate boundaries to others early. Choose a calming activity that honors your survival rather than your suffering, such as lighting a candle or writing a gratitude list. If flashbacks occur, use grounding techniques like naming five things you see. Support systems should know the date so they can check in proactively. Trauma anniversaries are not setbacks; they are maintenance reminders for your healing. Preparing for them shows maturity in your recovery process. You’re proving that the same event that once broke you no longer controls your story.
