1.5 – Preparing for a 911 Call When Your Teen Is Out of Control: Knowing when and how to call 911 is crucial when safety collapses. Preparation lowers panic. Store emergency numbers, your address, and medical details where you can grab them quickly. Decide in advance which behaviors — threats, violence, self-harm — demand outside help. When you call, stay factual: describe actions, not emotions. Inform dispatch that it’s a mental-health crisis and request trained responders if available. Clear the area of siblings and stay near exits without blocking them. When officers arrive, remain calm and cooperative; they respond to your tone as much as your words. Provide context about medications, triggers, or recent stressors. After the incident, document events and seek follow-up care, not blame. Planning ahead means your decisions can protect life, not just react to fear. Safety is not betrayal — it is love under pressure.
