1.41 – Emotional Safety Plans When Your Teen Gets Triggered: Emotional safety starts with recognizing triggers before explosion. List early signs — clenched fists, pacing, silence — and match each with calming options. Encourage your teen to rank coping tools from most to least helpful. Practice scripts such as “I need space” or “I’m overwhelmed.” Post the plan visibly and rehearse weekly. During activation, remind them of choices instead of commands. After calm returns, review effectiveness together. Predictability reduces fear for both of you. Safety planning transforms reactive chaos into managed emotion. It signals teamwork: two people preparing to protect peace instead of waiting for disaster to dictate behavior again.
