1.8 – What to Pack for a Crisis Exit With a Small Child: Preparing a crisis-exit bag builds peace of mind even if you never use it. Include copies of IDs, medical cards, and a comfort item your child recognizes instantly. Add diapers, wipes, a snack, water, and one change of clothes for each of you. Keep any needed medication in a clearly labeled pouch. Store the bag where you can reach it fast, but out of your child’s curiosity. Teach yourself the order: grab, breathe, move. Write an emergency contact list on paper in case your phone dies. Practice calm exits when safe, treating it like a safety drill, not fear training. Knowing what’s ready keeps panic from freezing you during real danger. Your toddler senses your confidence; preparation signals security. Even one night of readiness can save lives and reduce trauma’s long tail. Preparedness is empowerment, not paranoia.
