Lesson Overview

1.118 – Helping a Teen Create Their Own Crisis Plan: Teens need ownership to use coping tools effectively. Guiding them through building a personal crisis plan empowers independence and trust. Start by helping them identify warning signs unique to their mood shifts. Collaborate on safe contacts, preferred calming methods, and digital or physical safe spaces. Let them choose wording that feels authentic; forced language weakens engagement. Include reminders of strengths or achievements that reinforce hope during panic. Encourage them to share the plan with trusted adults and keep copies visible. Check in periodically but allow them control over updates—it’s their plan, not your project. The goal is confidence through preparation, not surveillance. Supporting a teen’s autonomy teaches responsibility while reinforcing safety. When youth believe their choices matter, crisis management evolves into lifelong emotional literacy and empowerment.
