Lesson Overview

1.3 – What to Do When Your Child Sees You Cry: When children see their parent cry, it can shake their sense of security, but honesty and warmth can turn that moment into understanding. Explain that adults have feelings too and that tears are a way of releasing heavy emotions. Let them know they didn’t cause the sadness and that love remains steady even when you’re upset. Avoid hiding your emotions completely—children sense more than words reveal. Instead, show them how people calm down: deep breaths, gentle words, or asking for a hug. This teaches that strength includes softness. Comforting each other creates emotional safety and builds empathy. Over time, your child learns that tears don’t mean weakness—they mean being human. That lesson helps them accept their own emotions with less fear and more compassion.
