Lesson Overview

1.9 – What to Say When Your Teen Screams “I Hate You”: Those three words can pierce like glass, but remember — “I hate you” often means “I feel hurt and powerless.” Pause before reacting. Take a slow breath and remind yourself the attack is emotional camouflage, not truth. Respond briefly and calmly: “I hear that you’re upset.” Do not argue love into existence; model it through composure. Later, when emotions cool, talk about the pain beneath the words and reaffirm unconditional care. Help them name feelings — betrayal, shame, or anger — that fuel those explosions. Keep your boundaries steady so they know words don’t destroy connection. Over time, security replaces spite. Every time you choose calm over combat, you teach emotional literacy. Hate shouted in pain fades when met with patience that refuses to echo cruelty.
