Lesson Overview

1.28 – How to Respond When You Feel Like Leaving: The urge to walk away forever during crisis is a sign of deep exhaustion, not lack of love. Recognize it as distress communication from your body begging for pause. Secure your toddler safely—crib, playpen, or soft floor—then step into another room for a few breaths. Splash cool water on your face to reset brain chemistry. Say aloud, “I’m staying, but I need space,” reminding yourself commitment remains intact. Call or text a trusted person with a simple code phrase for help if intensity rises. When you return, soften your tone and resume presence slowly. That controlled step-away is survival, not abandonment. Later, schedule regular decompression breaks to reduce buildup. Understanding flight impulses gives you power to manage them. Each moment you choose pause over escape reinforces your emotional endurance and teaches your child that safety can pause, but never disappears.
