Lesson Overview

1.10 – Parenting Through a Panic Attack: A parent mid-panic must prioritize oxygen before explanation. Ground yourself with physical cues—press your feet into the floor, notice five objects around you, breathe in for four counts, out for six. Tell your children you need a “quiet minute” so they learn regulation language. Panic ends faster when resisted less; remind yourself it’s temporary, not terminal. Prepare calming kits—mint gum, water, textured objects—to retrain focus. Afterward, debrief with your child about fear versus danger, distinguishing bodily reactions from real threats. Modeling vulnerability with recovery teaches resilience stronger than perfection ever could. Each controlled comeback rebuilds emotional credibility, showing children that fear can visit without taking permanent residence in the family’s story.
