Lesson Overview

1.38 – When Memories Crash: Emergency Self-Stabilization: Memory floods blur present and past, overwhelming sensory boundaries. Stabilization starts with orientation—say today’s date, your name, and location aloud. Anchor to sight and touch by describing objects nearby. Controlled breathing slows memory intrusion, giving cortex time to reassert logic. Avoid pushing memories away; focus on surroundings instead. Use cold water or textured objects to restore present awareness. If safe, journal fragments later for therapeutic review. Immediate goal: contain intensity, not analyze history. When grounded, engage gentle motion—walking or stretching—to discharge stress hormones. Over time, preparation ensures these crashes become shorter and less frightening. Remember, recall isn’t relapse; it’s data surfacing for healing. Responding with structure converts past pain into managed information rather than renewed trauma.
