Lesson Overview

13.11 – How Depression Affects Appetite and Energy: Depression changes how the body feels hunger and energy. Some people lose their appetite completely, while others overeat to fill emotional emptiness. Food can stop tasting good, or it can become the only comfort that brings momentary relief. At the same time, energy levels drop as the body’s metabolism slows, making every action feel like dragging through thick air. Low nutrition and low movement feed each other, deepening fatigue and foggy thinking. These shifts can lead to weight changes, stomach issues, or muscle weakness. Understanding that these symptoms are part of depression—not laziness or poor choices—helps reduce guilt. Nourishing the body, even with small meals or gentle snacks, becomes part of the healing process. Rest, hydration, and balanced meals slowly rebuild energy, which in turn supports better mood. Taking care of the body during depression is an act of quiet courage—it’s choosing to feed the very system that’s fighting to recover balance and strength again.
