32.20 – Why Some People Resist Forgiveness: Some people hold on to anger because it feels like protection from being hurt again. They fear that forgiving means weakness or forgetting what happened. Others feel that holding grudges keeps them in control, when in truth it keeps them stuck. Resistance to forgiveness often comes from fear—fear of vulnerability, fear of being hurt, or fear of letting go of identity tied to pain. Forgiveness can feel unfair when someone hasn’t apologized or shown remorse. Yet refusing to forgive can trap you in the same pain you’re trying to escape. Understanding resistance helps you see forgiveness as empowerment, not surrender. When people realize that forgiveness serves their healing, not the offender’s comfort, walls begin to fall. It’s a choice that takes bravery and trust in one’s own strength. Overcoming resistance is the first step toward emotional freedom.
