Lesson Overview

5.4 – The “What If” Spiral and How to Stop It: The “what if” spiral happens when your mind keeps imagining the worst possible outcomes. It can feel endless and exhausting, like falling into a tunnel of worry. To stop it, start by labeling it—say, “This is a what-if thought.” Then ground yourself in what’s actually happening right now. Ask, “Do I have proof this will happen?” or “What’s within my control?” Replace fearful guesses with practical steps. Breathing, journaling, or saying calming statements can also slow the spiral. Over time, your brain learns that uncertainty doesn’t always mean danger. Stopping the spiral early protects your peace and energy. It’s a skill that gets easier the more you practice.
