8.1 – Understanding What Shame Really Is: Shame is a deep feeling that tells you something about yourself is bad or unworthy. It can make you want to hide, stay quiet, or pull away from others. Unlike guilt, which focuses on actions, shame focuses on identity—it whispers that you are the problem. This feeling can come from mistakes, criticism, or even beliefs you learned from others. It often grows when you feel exposed or judged. Understanding shame means learning that it is not proof of who you are—it’s just an emotion trying to protect you from rejection. Everyone feels shame at some point, and that makes it human, not a flaw. The key is to see shame as a signal, not a sentence. When you can name it, you can start to loosen its hold. The more you understand where it comes from, the less power it has over your choices and your confidence.
